About My Work
|
Figurative paintings can acquire the responsibility of addressing social, environmental and political issues through visual parables. This combination has the potential to interact with a wider audience. Beginning in the mid-eighties, I have worked mainly in series-form. The "Eagle and Snake Series" symbolizes the ongoing struggle for survival in a diminishing environment. The "Bear Series" deals with political and habitat-related issues. The Grizzly Bear was legislated as the California State Mammal in 1942, 20 years after its demise within the state, making California's heraldry an image of hypocrisy. Another metaphor for me is the Teddy Bear. There seems to be a direct relationship between its growing popularity and the decline of the "Real Thing". The "Butterfly Project" is part of the "Animals at Risk Series". It could just as well belong with the "Warming Trend Series". Butterflies are so delicate and sensitive to climate change. They are our warning, our canary in the coalmine. "Warming Trend" was begun in 1997 and I am still evolving with the topic. What can one say about "Guys in Suits" except that we have come this far in spite of them. The String Game has entertained people for thousands of years. The "Cat's Cradle" might as well be called the cradle of civilization. The same figures are played on all continents but have different names depending on the economy and geography. "Jacob's Ladder" is called "The Fishnet" in Alaska, "The Bridge" in Quebec and "The Calabash Net" in Africa. The "Children Series" and the "Icarus Project" are ongoing with no end in sight. Blessed are the Children, for they light the way into the future in spite of our many assaults on them and the planet. |
